Choosing to have obesity surgery is a big decision
Here are some things to consider before deciding obesity surgery is for you

                    - Are you considering bariatric surgery for morbid obesity?

                    - Are you classed as being morbidly obese? (BMI over 40 or 35 with 2 obesity related illnesses)

                    - Have you tried other methods to lose weight before considering surgery for morbid obesity?

                    - Have you researched the pros and cons of different obesity operations, such as laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic duodenal switch and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?

                    - Are you clinically fit for an operation?

                    - Are you over 18 years old?

                    - Which bariatric surgeon?

                    - How experienced is your bariatric surgeon in obesity surgery?

                    - Do you have a good rapport with your bariatric surgeon?

                    - What if surgical complications occur?

                    - How will you fund your surgery? Prices vary according to the type of surgery, where the surgery takes place, and by whom.

                    - Is the after-care included in the package price? Those who choose a laparoscopic gastric band will require 4 or more follow-up visits in the first 6 months. Laparoscopic gastric bypass and duodenal switch patients will require a minimum of 3 follow-up visits in the first 6 months.

                    - Can you commit to life-long follow-up, including blood tests and regular visits to your bariatric surgeon? Blood tests are essential, especially for those who have the laparoscopic gastric bypass or duodenal switch procedure.

                    - Are you committed to a new way of eating and regular exercise?

                    - Do you have support from your friends/family/GP? Are they well informed about bariatric surgery?

                    - Remember, this is not cosmetic surgery, fat is not removed.
